How to keep Pigeons away from your house?

Wasp Nest

Whenever we think about “pests” we always think about some insects or rodents, we never think about birds. The fact of the matter is that birds can be a great nuisance and cause a lot of trouble. Almost all birds are considered to be pests, some birds like to live in nature away from urban areas, and some like Pigeons prosper in urban areas, especially big cities where they can find easy food like crumbs of bread, or any other leftover food items. In nature birds like to nest on high places such as treetops or high in the cliffs, some birds have adapted to living in cities and make their nests on rooftops or high windows or any other nook or cranny they can find. Of all urban birds, pigeons are the ones that prosper the most, pigeons are found in almost all of great cities in the world. Pigeons can nest in any nook or cranny and can cause a lot of mess. Their droppings smell very bad and can also carry a lot of diseases, that’s why pigeons are sometimes termed as “rats with wings”.

So, what really attracts pigeons.

  1. Nesting: Flat surfaces that are covered can attract pigeons to make their nests, the cover can help them hide from predators like crows, and eagles.
  2. Easy Access to Food: If there is food laying outside your home, maybe leftover food in the rubbish bins, that can also attract pigeons.
  3. Vegetation: If you have a garden or a lot of potted plants in your balcony that can attract not only pigeons but many other birds as well.

So, what can you do to keep pigeons away?

Here are a few things you can try to keep the pigeons away from your house:

  1. Scarecrows: Scarecrows may seem like a very rural solution to this urban problem, but it can work. Install a scarecrow in the areas where pigeons seem to come the most. Be sure to move the statue around every once in a while, so the pigeons don’t get used to it.
  2. Structural Changes: You can make certain structural changes to make it difficult for the birds to get access to your home, like installing screens on windows or any other spots where birds may nest. Slanted roof tiles will also keep the birds from making nests on top.

Although it may not seem like a big problem, but a bird infestation can also cause trouble for you like any other pest infestation. Take action in the initial phase to save the trouble and money of calling pest control professional help.
